Post Price records single price
In my opinion it would be handy if price records showed average/highest/lowest single prices, now we see an average price based on an x number of items, which doesn't rly say something.

for example:

10 summoning stones sold for 3K
100 summoning stones sold for 30K

will give an average price of 16,5K on said summoning stones...

When I want an average, I will have to manually calculate the total of 33K / 110 stones and come to conclusion that it's about 300g ea. But that last bit shows nowhere. This is a very small example, but try the records for fruitcake, and the calculation is a bit more difficult, and Spiked Eggnog will be a pain.

Can something be done about this?

Post Re: Price records single price
Price Records currently shows single, highest and average price so I presumed that Maarten had set it up for the Average Price to = total value sold / total number of single items?

Is that not what you see?

If not, then I would have thought it was feasible for Maarten to fix that but his time for doing stuff for the Site has become restricted with his r/life. ;)

I think there is another thread under Suggestions or Bugs about this topic. I'll check it out and see what the conclusion was.

/EDIT

Cannot find it but I was sure this had been discussed before. Not to worry. Maarten will remember it and know his conclusions IF it existed. ;)

What I meant is the total above all the colums, now it says:

Matches found: x
Lowest price: x
Highest price: x
Average price: x

but the amounts are for what the auction sold for, not for single items. In my opinion Price Records is a section to quickly get an indication of an items selling/buying price. The way the totals are now, it's just not useful. That is, for me.

I see what you mean with Fruitcake. It is a good example.

The single price is really the only good data

Highest price is corrupted by the number of auctions with variant numbers of fruitcakes sold and Average Price is then corrupted (and obviously so) as it returns a result of 9.45k which is clearly absurd.

For the moment the only solution I can see is to visually scan the single price column and then multiply what you see as the most common single price and multiply that by the number of items you actually intend to sell.

Maarten can probably fix this quite quickly if he gets the time but that's not a Bearz guarantee. :P

Super! That way we can price check quickly when setting up an auction. Let's hope Maarten will have some time soon. :haha:

We did discuss something related. In fact, in the past this used to be exactly what the price records did. The problem is though, the single price is not stored in the database but calculated every time you search the price records. It used to be calculated for every single auction that matched your search, but the amount of data in the price records has grown quite a bit, and it caused searches to take extremely long.

To fix it, the single price is only calculated for items that are shown on the current page. Drawback is that without knowing the single price of each auction matching the search, you can't base the min/max/average price on the single price.

Or simply let the server calculate everything, but erase price records after a set time, 2-3 years for example. I'm not curious what a fruitcake/weapon/or anything else sold for in 2007, i want to know it's value now. Also, any corrupted data, due to selling cheap to get reputation up quickly to get in the Hall of Fame, would vanish after a while. Leaving clean data. (yeay for clean data :haha: )

Frozen's solution would work too, but then u still have the incredible load of data stashed on the server. If there was an extra server doing all the math for this, that wouldn't be a problem.

Well, data storage isn't really a problem, transferring the data from the database to the web server is the problem. The best solution would be to calculate all single prices once whenever something is added to the price records, and once for all the old price records. Then the database server can calculate the mean, min and max very fast (it's what they do :P ) and only the mean, min, max and one page of records needs to be transferred from the database to the web server.

I might be able to squeeze it in somewhere in my agenda :uhh:
